What do we do?

We serve as advocates for youth. We are particularly interested in finding ways to pro-actively address issues which affect youth and to encourage youth themselves to help resolve these issues.  Substance abuse, truancy, lack of positive role models, teen pregnancy, and teen crime are just a few of the problems which can keep our youth from reaching their full potential.  When potential is wasted we are all much poorer and the community suffers the loss of a valuable resource.

The Atascadero Youth Task Force’s April2001 Certificate of Achievement for outstanding service by youth to youth and the community goes to Ryan Pierce, Elizabeth Denny, Rosanna Naomi Lozano, Serena Bruce, Jessica Hannemann, and Chrisi Thomas Atascadero High School Students.  The efforts of these students in their participation in the San Luis Obispo County Youth Summit made isolation of one an impossible task so we have selected all six students to receive the award.  These students are actively involved in the Task Force’s 40 developmental asset program and have committed to making presentations to local youth, service clubs and the faith community on the value of assets in lives of our youth.  These youth have been major contributors to the recent video project that many will see on the cable as short spot announcements designed to emphasize the asset development in young people.  Their enthusiasm, involvement and dedication to youth reflect their interpersonal competence, personal power, sense of purpose, creative abilities, and integrity.  Their service to others proves the value of youth in the community.  We of the Task Force want to thank them for proving that youth are our most valuable asset

Ryan Pierce (15) is a student at Atascadero High School.  He lives in Santa Margarita. He has 4 brothers and three sisters.  His parents are Ray and Paula.  He enjoys being with friends, meeting new people and helping others, and most of all talking.  He is currently involved in the F.F.A., Friday Night Live and the Asset Development Program.  He hopes to become a teacher or work with Friday Night Live when he finishes school, and it goes without saying that he is a fine young man.

Elizabeth Denny is a sophomore at Atascadero High School. She is actively involved in Friday Night Live, the AYTF Asset Development Program, Atascadero High School Girls’ Golf Team, the International Club, and the Atascadero Advanced Women’s’ Choir.  She has lived in Atascadero for 14 years with her mother, dad and two sisters.  She plans on attending CalPoly or UCSB after high school to study for medicine or counseling.  She currently works as a recreation leader at the junior high school.  Elizabeth is a real asset to our program.

Rosanna Naomi Lozano is an outgoing 15 almost 16 year old.  She recently moved to Atascadero and lives with her Aunt and Uncle.  Her favorite sport is basketball, she likes shopping, hanging out with her friends, listening to music, singing and dancing.  She cares about others problems and feelings, is ready to listen or when asked provide advice.  She considers herself a good role model and likes participating in different activities.  Her motto is “a smile makes a persons day a lot brighter”.  Rosanna is a team player, has excellent friendship skills and is a “cool” person to be around.

Serena Bruce is a 15 year old sophomore at Atascadero High School.  She is involved with many youth activities including Tri-county Regional Team, California Youth Advocacy Network, and the Atascadero Youth Task Force.  She is in Choir, drama, swimming for fun, and loves animals.  Her dream job is to be an actress or drama teacher.  She enjoys the opportunity that the Asset Development Program has given her to meet new people.  She wants to encourage adults to keep on listening and thank those that are listening now.  Serena is a leader in this effort.

Jessica Hannemann is a sophomore at Atascadero High School and actively involved in the 40 Developmental Asset Program.  Jessica identifies youth who experience problems with the lack of specific assets and is committed to increasing the asset inventory of her peers as well as her own.  Jessica came to Atascadero from Arizona where her older sister still resides.  Jessica lives here with her mother and Dad.  She love animals and has two dogs.  Jessica’s ability to identify assets with specific at risk behaviors is an asset in itself and makes her a valuable member of our team.

Chrisi Thomas is a senior at Atascadero High School.  She moved to Atascadero 4 years ago a shy young student who has definitely broken out of her shell.  She is a member of the Water Polo Team and named as the Most Valuable Player this year.  She has a Student Intern job with the Department of Social Services, and says she is lucky to be able to work at something this early in life that really makes a difference.  She wants to help others and this was the driving force behind her becoming involved with the Youth Task Force.  She feels the need to learn how things work and how to make a difference. We feel like she is already making a difference as a valuable asset to the community and a role model for her peers.

The Task Force wants to thank these young people for a job well done and encourage them to stay involved in the community as youth and when they become adults.

Asset Type #1 – Support- The more love, support, and adult contacts a child has the more likely he or she is to grow up healthy.

Only 41% of the youth surveyed nationally experience at least three of the six support assets.

Six Key Areas of Support:

       Family Support

       Positive Family Communication

       Other adult relationships

       Caring Neighborhood

       Caring School climate

       Parent involvement in schooling

Helpful Hints:

Adjust the way you support your child as he or she grows

Indentify your own sources of support and what you can learn from them

Ask your child what kind of support he or she likes best

Watch for non-verbal clues from your child saying he or she neds your support.

FINALLY --------

“Children need to know that, whatever else may happen, their parents love them” (Michael Popkin, Ph.D., Director of the Active Parenting Program.)

Asset Development Video Project

The Atascadero Youth Task Force has received a grant to develop a community awareness of the Asset Development Philosophy. Every one can build assets. This grant will be used to develop a video based on local youth and adults and their perspective of the concepts and what each can do to help develop assets in the communities young people. Volunteers are needed to help with the project. Tasks would include serving on the panels
Participating as the audience and eventually to assist in using the video to take The philosophy to the community through presentations at community groups
Churches, service clubs and other public forums. Rick Mathews is chairing this exciting and important project and CHARTER COMMUNICATIONS is going to provide the expertise to develop the video.
